Getting started with ChatGPT
A step-by-step introduction to using ChatGPT effectively.
Open ChatGPT
Go to chatgpt.com. In supported regions, you may be able to try the service without an account; creating one adds controls such as conversation history and data export. Follow the current on-screen instructions because sign-in options can change.
Explore the interface
Use the message box to describe one clear task. Depending on your device and account, the interface may also offer files, images or voice. Start with a low-risk task whose output you can review, such as reorganising notes or explaining a familiar concept.
Write your first prompt
A prompt is the question or instruction you send. State a testable goal, such as: “Explain the difference between machine learning and generative AI in three sentences for a beginner.” Clear scope helps the model produce a relevant answer, but it does not guarantee accuracy.
Add useful context
Include the goal, audience, constraints, available source material and desired output. Ask for a checklist, table or draft when that format is useful. If tone or structure matters, provide a short example instead of relying on vague adjectives.
Ask follow-up questions
Continue in the same chat to request clarification, corrections or a different format. Ask ChatGPT to identify its assumptions and anything it could not verify. Start a new chat when the subject changes so that old instructions do not distort the new task.
Explore available features
Your plan, model, region and current product version determine which tools are available. These may include file or image analysis, web search, image creation and voice. Check the controls in your account and the official documentation before relying on a specific feature.
Protect sensitive information
Never enter passwords, trade secrets or personal data that you are not authorised to share. For consequential decisions, verify claims against reliable, current sources. A confident answer can still be incomplete, outdated or wrong. Compare the approaches in our ChatGPT and Claude comparison.
Keep learning
Turn a successful chat into a repeatable workflow: save the instruction, quality criteria and final verification step. To review the features, use cases and limitations recorded by Trust-Vault, open the ChatGPT profile.
Well done!
