Gemini Google: My Take After Six Months on Workspace Business

In short: Gemini is Google's generative AI suite, deeply integrated across Workspace, Search, Android, and Cloud. After six months of daily use, it shines for organizations already inside Google's ecosystem, excels at Gmail and Sheets tasks, but still trails Claude on long-form writing and ChatGPT on open-ended creativity.

I rolled out Gemini for Workspace at an industrial client over the course of 2025 (45 Workspace Business Plus seats), then switched my own work and personal accounts to Gemini Advanced, running it alongside my ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro. Six months of daily use later, here's what I take away from it — no soft pedaling for Google, and none for its competitors either.

Gemini is Google's generative AI suite, the successor to Bard. It spans a family of models and integrations across the Google ecosystem — Search, Workspace, Android, Cloud. For organizations already living inside Google's ecosystem, it's the most tightly integrated alternative to ChatGPT.

The Gemini Family

Google ships several models under the Gemini name:

• Gemini Flash: fast, economical, built for high-frequency applications
• Gemini Pro: a good balance of capability and access conditions
• Gemini Ultra: the most powerful, available in Gemini Advanced

The models are natively multimodal: text, images, audio, video, and code in a single interface.

Gemini Inside Google Workspace

For organizations on Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet), Gemini plugs in directly:

• Gmail: summarizing long email threads, reply suggestions, assisted drafting
• Google Docs: content generation and rewriting
• Google Sheets: natural-language formulas, data analysis
• Google Meet: transcription, meeting summaries
• Google Drive: semantic search across your files

For Microsoft 365 organizations, the equivalent is GitHub Copilot for code and Microsoft 365 Copilot for productivity.

Gemini vs ChatGPT vs Claude

It depends on the use case:

• ChatGPT: the GPT Store ecosystem, a wide range of third-party integrations, best for consumer-facing use
• Claude: writing, document analysis, code
• Gemini: the best pick if you're inside the Google Cloud or Google Workspace ecosystem

Gemini's edge is native integration with Google's services. If your organization runs on GCP, BigQuery, or Google Workspace, Gemini is the natural path.

Gemini and GDPR

Google holds significant certifications for its cloud services (ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR compliance). For Workspace Enterprise, DPAs are available and data can stay within the EU depending on the configuration. Check our GDPR checklist for the points worth verifying.

My Real-World Feedback on Workspace

The Gmail integration genuinely changed how I handle my inbox. Summarizing a 20-message thread takes five seconds. On standard emails, the reply suggestions are usable as-is about 70% of the time without edits. At my industrial client, the head of sales reckoned Gemini saved him around 40 minutes a day on email handling alone.

The Google Docs integration is less convincing for long-form writing. Gemini rewrites correctly, but on original creation it still falls short of Claude Sonnet 4.5. For reports, briefs, and internal summaries, it's more than enough. For published editorial content, I still prefer Claude.

Sheets with Gemini is a pleasant surprise. Asking in plain language "calculate the average monthly growth over the last twelve months and identify the best-performing month" returns a correct formula plus an explanatory note. For non-technical people, it's a real on-ramp to data analysis.

Gemini Advanced vs ChatGPT Plus

For my personal use, I regularly compare Gemini Advanced and ChatGPT Plus on the same tasks. My takeaway: Gemini is better at anything touching native Google services (relevant real-time search, YouTube and Drive integration). ChatGPT stays ahead on open-ended creativity, code, and the finesse of multi-step reasoning.

According to the Chatbot Arena benchmark (LMSYS), Gemini 2.0 Pro regularly lands in the global top 5. The gap with GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet is measured in Elo points — not a chasm, but genuine parity.

The Workspace Enterprise Trap

On the Workspace rollout I supported, moving from Workspace Business Plus to Workspace Enterprise to get integrated Gemini Advanced multiplies the per-seat access conditions significantly. Before flipping the switch, you need to measure whether real usage justifies the premium. Across the client's 45 seats, I found that only 15 users had enough heavy usage to warrant it — so I recommended keeping 30 seats on Business Plus and moving only the 15 active ones to Enterprise. Annual savings: substantial.

Privacy: What You Need to Know

Google has communicated heavily about not using Workspace prompts to train its models. On paper, it's clear. In practice, I require my clients to formally sign the Google Workspace DPA and archive it. For highly sensitive data, deploying Vertex AI Gemini with enforced European residency is the option to consider — but it requires a technical team to implement.
